The Controller directs the financial affairs of the organization and prepares financial analyses of operations, including interim and year-end financial statements with supporting schedules, for the guidance of the board of directors.  The Controller is responsible for the company’s financial plans and policies, its accounting practices, the conduct of its relationships with lending institutions, the maintenance of its fiscal records, and the preparation of financial reports.  The position supervises the Accounting Manager and Administrator of Clinical Finance and oversees the general accounting area and financial planning and analysis. This position also prepares other reports and projects as requested from the Chief Financial Officer.

  • Coordinates and administers an adequate plan for the control of operations. Such a plan provides profit planning, forecasts, expense budgets, accounts receivable, cost standards, saving opportunities, and capital investing, together with the necessary controls and procedures to effectuate the plan.
  • Compares performance with operating plans and standards. Provides reports and interprets the results of operations to all levels of management.  This includes the formulation of accounting policies, the preparation of financial statements and operating data, the coordination of systems and procedures, and special reports as directed by the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Forecasts short-range and long-range cash requirements and obligations, as a basis for maintaining adequate funds.
  • Assures protection for the assets of the business through internal control, internal auditing, and ensuring proper insurance coverage.
  • Provides other department units with related information required by them to carry out their assigned responsibilities including information necessary for physician bonus calculations,
  • Meeting with medical group and hospital leadership and staff as needed
  • Establishes and implements a sound operational and organizational plan in direct support of the business plan.
  • Keeps the Chief Financial Officer informed of the division’s performance and provides advice on all financial matters.
  • Executes cash disbursements for payment of corporate and divisional expenditures in accordance with disbursement and policies.
  • Coordinates the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts, institutes and maintains other planning and control procedures and analyzes report variances.
  • Monitors investment portfolio and manager performance relative to investment committee goals and advises management regarding performance.
  • Assures that effective communications are maintained within the department. Where appropriate, informs Accounting Manager and Administrator of Clinical Finance and employees as to plans and progress.
  • Participates in meetings and assists with strategic acquisitions of the group.
  • Coordinates annual financial audit.
  • Responsible for completion and filing of external reporting for income taxes, retirement and benefit plans, payroll, and other.
  • Administers Physician Housing Program
  • Participate and evaluate new business arrangements through New Business Arrangements
  • Support the CHLAMG Budget & Compensation and Audit & Investment Committee meetings with the CFO
  • Review and approve payroll
  • Administer access to Treasury, General Ledger, Financial Reporting and Payroll systems


Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting or Finance. Master’s degree preferred.
  2. CPA license required
  3. A minimum of eight (8) years’ experience ideally gained through increasingly responsible management position within Finance.
  4. A minimum of two (2) years recent experience as a Controller with responsibility for accounting, budgeting, financial reporting and analysis, cost accounting, and treasury.
  5. Preferably annual revenues budgets experience in excess of $150 million
  6. Healthcare experience required
  7. Ability to work independently

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Knowledge of accounting theory, principles and practices to identify and describe accounting systems and subsystems.  Knowledge of budgeting and of cost accounting principles, organizational policies, procedures, systems and objectives.  Knowledge of fiscal management and personnel management techniques.  Knowledge of health care administration systems.  Ability to prepare statistical and narrative accounting reports.  Thorough knowledge of computer system and applications as Sage 100 (or other ERP Systems), Microsoft Excel and Word.  Skill in planning, organizing and supervising. Good leadership skills with a team-oriented approach.  Skill in exercising initiative, judgement, problem-solving, decision-making.  Skill in developing and maintaining effective relationships with medical, administrative staff, and physicians.  Skill in developing comprehensive reports.  Ability to analyze and interpret complex data.  Ability to research and prepare comprehensive reports.  Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.  Ability to communicate clearly.
